Back in the Saddle

One of the hardest things to do is get back in the saddle after a hard fall and then be as confident riding as you were beforehand. Even the best riders and professionals, go through this every time they fall. But what is the secret to getting back on with confidence?

Getting Back On

One of the most essential rules, when you fall off, is getting back on straight away. It is far easier to get back on before the shock of what just happened has had time to run through your brain, than it is to get on a day later when you have had time to stew and consider the consequences. A great man once said, "Why put off till tomorrow, what you can do today". The longer you put off riding the less likely you will be able to get back on again.

If you feel your knees shaking and your stomach plummeting at the mere thought of getting back on your horse, then pushing the fear is can be very important. I know that it is hard but pushing through the fear really helps. Think about what you are going to better next time to make sure you do or about what you are going to have for dinner tonight. Anything except the fall or falling off again.

Keep in mind that for some getting back on for some can weaken the confidence even further. You should avoid falling off again so steer clear of situations that involve that risk. Getting back on and just walking around can seriously help avoid confidence issues later on if you wait to get back up there.

Now there is a thin line between common sense and idiocy. Chances are if you fell off than there was something wrong with your riding. Before you attempt anything you need to consider why you fall off and how to make sure it doesn't happen again. Also, you should always make sure you end the ride on a good note. If you can't ensure that by trying to do what ever made you fall off in the first place, then repeating it in that ride is probaly not a good idea. Just getting back on the horse and walking around can be a massive achievement in itself. Just do whatever makes you comfortable, aslong as you get back on the horse.

When not to get back on

Falling off is hard and often painful. Make sure your horse is uninjuried and it is safe to get back on. Always make sure nothing is injuried before getting on as well. If your surrounding are unsafe move to safety before making a decision about what to do next. If you or the horse is injuried stay put aslong as it doesn't affect your or your horses safety and call for help.
