Why Warm-up
For horses of all ages warming up is important. Firstly warm-ups decrease the risk of tendon and ligament damage, by gradually stretching them to greater motion with less risk of injury. Secondly, they reduce muscle stiffness by gradually increasing the horse's body temperature and circulation. And Thirdly warm-ups improve the horse's range of motion, stretching everything at a rate that is less harmful to your horse.Warm-up Exercises
Horses need plenty of time to warm-up properly. No hard work like jumping or on a collected contact should be done till at least 15 minutes into the ride. A good long walk can be very beneficial to every ride.
Exercises such as long and low (stretching the horse's neck down in a loosely rounded frame) stretch out the whole topline while encouraging the horse to step underneath and lift its frame.
Circles and lateral bend work on the horse's suppleness and get them stretching out.
Transitions between walk and trot and later trot and canter, get the horse's blood pumping and encourage them to focus on your aids.
